Simple Food Photography

28, April, 2016

Sometimes it is not necessary to splash out on expensive lights and modifiers, sometimes simple things around the house can make a difference. What follows are a series of images using only silver foil card (kitchen foil would do equally as well!) and white card.

The Standard Garlic Bulb

The above shot was taken on a chopping board and black granite chopping board for a background. Light is from a window to the right of the camera on an overcast day. There is also a window behind the black background.

I added a piece of white card to the left of the camera as we look. this has made the Garlic Bulb a little more even lit.

By removing the white card and placing a silver foil card to the right of the camera I was able to bounce light from the window behind the background and eliminate the light coming from the right hand window. Note the harsher shadow cast on the wooden base.

This final shot, with this arrangement  is with both the silver and white cards deployed either side of the Garlic Bulb.

By flipping the boards, it's possible to create another option.

The final image below is the set up
